A host of extra features
Combining the static historical data of TomTom IQ Routes™ with dynamic information of TomTom HD Traffic™ - TomTom’s real time traffic service, and maps that incorporate daily updates via TomTom Map Share™, the new range offers the ultimate and most intelligent navigation on the market today.
TomTom LIVE Services
The TomTom GO x40 LIVE series comes with a range of essential information services for motorists, delivered directly to the devices ‘over-the-air’ via a built-in SIM card:
TomTom High Definition Traffic™
According to recent research, 49% of Britons say that traffic jams are the most frustrating and stressful part of their day*. The TomTom GO x40 LIVE models automatically connect to TomTom’s exclusive High Definition (HD) Traffic service for the most accurate and detailed live traffic information, which is updated every three minutes. If the measured traffic conditions differ from the expected traffic flow, the TomTom GO x40 LIVE will automatically calculate a better, alternative route if one is available. The expected time of arrival will also be adjusted accordingly.
TomTom Safety Alerts with mobile camera data from Road Angel™
With an average of £60 in camera fines received per driver in the UK every year, accurate safety camera data is becoming more and more vital. As well as a comprehensive fixed safety camera database, users will have access to the most accurate mobile camera data, supplied in partnership with Road Angel (UK only). In addition, the service will include real-time safety camera reporting and sharing, meaning users can keep each other informed about mobile safety cameras. Drivers will also receive warnings about unmanned railway crossings, schools, places of worship, and other potential accident blackspots.
TomTom Fuel Price Search
With 66% of Britons concerned about the cost of fuel more than any other modern-day issue, including the failing economy and knife crime*, TomTom has included one of the most useful features for drivers today – a fuel price search to allow users to locate up-to-date pricing information from 12,000 fuel stations across the UK, and guide them to the cheapest fuel stations along their route or in their local area. TomTom has calculated that high mileage drivers can save up to £250 per year in fuel costs using this service**. As well as saving money with the Fuel Price Search function, TomTom customers in the UK will also benefit from a free fuel card included with each purchase.
Local Search with Google
Google Search gives TomTom users access to information and location details of more than 11 million businesses and turns search results into a destination with the press of a button. Results show the location name, a user-generated rating (if available) and phone number, so drivers can call ahead to book a restaurant or hotel of their choice, for example.
TomTom Weather
The TomTom GO 540 LIVE devices also provide five-day weather reports in the local area, or for the chosen destination, allowing users to plan their journey according to road conditions.
TomTom QuickGPSFix
Allows drivers to begin their journey immediately, by locating satellite information – now updated ‘live’, rather than via TomTom HOME.
TomTom Buddies
With Buddies, drivers can link their TomTom device to those of their friends so they can locate each other on the map, share favourite locations, as well as exchanging and sharing location information and messages.

Map Coverage
The TomTom GO 540 LIVE comes pre-installed with door-to-door maps of the United Kingdom.
IQ Routes™ technology
The innovative IQ Routes™ technology is based on real average speeds measured on roads, rather than static maximum speeds per road type. This means the new TomTom GO range determines a route by considering all possible routes and then selecting the one that takes the least time. In almost 50% of all journeys, this results in driving a different and faster route, saving significant travel time as well as saving money and fuel.
“With the introduction of IQ Routes™ technology, we continue to focus our efforts on features and content that improve the core navigation experience”, says Harold Goddijn, TomTom’s chief executive officer. “Everyone knows that traffic on Sunday is different to traffic on Monday and this is exactly what has been taken into account on the new TomTom GO. IQ Routes™ delivers what we call ‘intelligent routing’ – an even smarter and efficient way of planning your daily route.”
TomTom IQ Routes™
The new TomTom IQ Routes™ technology is based on actual average speeds on roads, rather than the sign-posted speed limits. This intelligent routing technology is based on anonymous historical speed profiles of over 10 billion kilometres of driven roads, gathered over the years by millions of TomTom users. It takes into account all the factors that may influence the time it takes drivers to get to their destination, including traffic lights, roundabouts, steep slopes and speed bumps.
The TomTom IQ Routes™ speed profile database continues to grow at the rate of over half a billion measurements per day, so the time and spatial accuracy of TomTom IQ Routes™ technology will continually increase. Drivers can be confident that they will always be given the smartest route incorporating detailed local knowledge. This allows for more efficient daily route planning, in particular when driving through urban and mountainous areas.
We all know traffic is different during a Monday morning rush hour from a lazy Sunday afternoon. We all want the best shortcuts to bring us to our destination in the fastest way possible. But heavy traffic, speed bumps, traffic lights, roundabouts and even schoolchildren or shopping crowds can slow you down. That handy shortcut you’re looking for varies depending on time and day. Which means your shortest route isn’t necessarily going to be the fastest all the time!
The standard shortest route from London Commercial Road, to Gloucester Terrace at a relatively quiet time, and without any hold-ups, should take you 20 minutes (screen 1).
However, that same shortest route will typically take you 29 minutes during a busier period (reality) (screen 2).
Using ‘local knowledge’ gained from the actual travel experiences of thousands of TomTom users on these very roads, IQ Routes™ instantly works out your optimal route from London Commercial Road, to Gloucester Terrace. It also calculates your realistic journey time, based on real speeds people are able to drive, not just speed limits. (screen 3)
As you can see, in this case your route is now 0.7 kilometre longer, but will save you 3 minutes (and a good deal of stress!). Now that’s a shortcut!
How it works
Millions of TomTom users worldwide voluntarily provide us with anonymous historical speed-data from each of their journeys every time they connect their device to TomTom HOME .
As a result, TomTom now has a huge database, containing billions of miles of real customer driving experience, collected over the years from more than 7 million TomTom users.
Using this data, TomTom’s unique IQ Routes™ technology calculates your optimal route. This route is based on actual speed data driven on roads, not just maximum speed limits, taking into account any hold-ups that might slow you down (busy junctions, zebra crossings and even shopping crowds).
This data enhances the quality of TomTom navigation across the board, but is particularly helpful in improving the quality of detailed routing we give you for the specific time of day and day of the week of your chosen trip.
Drive like local
So even if you drive through unfamiliar areas, you still can drive like a local by knowing the short cuts that are based on the collective driving experience of millions of TomTom users.
Did you know?
IQ Routes™ technology gives you a faster route in over 50% of all your journeys.
And don’t forget: IQ Routes™ is just one of many groundbreaking TomTom technologies that make your journey quicker, easier, safer, more predictable and less stressful.
A real difference
3 Minutes may not sound much, but it’s over 10% off your journey time. Just consider for a moment how much time that will save you over a whole year… Exactly!
And it’s not just urban driving. Whether its roundabouts, crossroads, schoolchildren or just good old-fashioned congestion. Anywhere the traffic flow can vary, IQ Routes can make a real difference.
Advanced Lane Guidance
In addition, the new TomTom GO series features Advanced Lane Guidance, a first for the navigation mass market. Advanced Lane Guidance gives drivers a more realistic view and enhanced visual instructions of drivers’ surroundings, ensuring they are better informed about the situation ahead.
With the new Advanced Lane Guidance feature, navigating difficult junctions becomes easier than ever before. The realistic representation of highway junctions on the screen including clear arrows indicating the lane direction, provide drivers with timely instructions to take the correct lane. Static images of road signs, in the same colour as the ones displayed on the road ensure drivers have an even better overview of their surroundings.
Screen 1
You have your normal 3D navigation view up to 800 metres from the junction.
Screen 2
From 800 meters until you’re through the junction, your TomTom device displays a clear image of the junction. This shows the relevant road signs with numbers and directions, and a blinking arrow that clearly shows which lane you must take. Your screen throughout this has the still image and your status bar remains updated with dynamic information.
Screen 3
As soon as you’re through the junction, your screen reverts to the normal view. What could be simpler, what could be safer?
Unique TomTom Map Share™ Technology
The TomTom GO 540 LIVE also sees the introduction of TomTom’s unique new map improvement technology, TomTom Map Share™. This technology enables drivers to easily and instantly improve their own maps. It also lets users share improvements and benefit from all other users’ improvements, daily, automatically and easily via Tom Tom HOME – TomTom’s free software application. TomTom has the world’s largest satellite navigation community with over 10 million users. TomTom Map Share™ users can contribute and exchange all their improvements amongst each other, making the best maps available for all of them. Tom Tom Map Share™ means TomTom drivers can always have the most up-to-date maps and inside local knowledge at their fingertips (see separate press release for more information on TomTom Map Share™).
Enhanced Hands-free Kit
The enhanced hands-free kit features a new high quality sound system offering users the best hands-free calling experience via Bluetooth®. With optimised acoustic design, enhanced noise reduction, echo cancellation and an automatic answer function, the TomTom GO 540 ensure drivers can make and receive calls easier than ever whilst keeping their eyes focussed on the road.
TomTom HD Traffic
TomTom HD traffic is basically a replacement power cable which not only powers the SatNav but also has built in communications capabilities (using a SIM card and GPRS) to provide real time traffic information. This data is not just the standard traffic data we get via TMC, but it is enriched with actual current traffic conditions (via anonymous cellphone monitoring) enabling better and more accurate routes to be generated with realistic Estimated Times of Arrival.
