HTC Diamond
Hi
I think all negatives reviews that I was reading about Diamond, was based on the earlier units... because my its working like a charm. I have it for a few days now, and no prob. with it. I also recommend to check if you need an ROM updated, witch can be found in HTC webpage, witch I did and it was strait forward. I want to think of something negative about Diamond, is that is little bit slow, but its not that annoying, and ones you got use to it you don't notice anymore, and the second would be the battery, but as it can be charged via USB connection... I gues you can always charge it from any computer...
Like I said, didn't get any issues with it. It does what it suppose to do, I even installed iGo8, and its working fine. It finds the satellites in max 2min.

1st try a little disappointing
I received the phone next day as promised, loved the phone, very solid, and after a short while I got used to the Touchflo interface. The phone is feature packed and was very easy to set up, had all my pop accounts working in minutes. The game on the phone was brilliant, the internet access very good. Had everything I need as a business user, and hoping I will be less reliant on my laptop going forward.

The only problem is I’ve returned my phone due to a problem with the power, it powered off the screen whenever I received a call, and had to do a soft reset go get the screen to power back on. I got the phone at the weekend, and only by chance rang myself when testing my new softphone at home.

Can’t wait to get the phone replaced, will certainly invest in the pouch and desk charger

Excellent, but...
Generally speaking, this is as fantastic phone - or at least it will be, when a few of the kinks have been ironed out.

The hardware seems pretty much fine (apart from a dismally underpowered 900 mAh battery and no SDHC slot), but the software contains several bugs and errors, which seem to depend on the ROM version you get on your phone. My ROM is 1.37.405.1, and the most serious problem I've had is that the GPS doesn't work. It WILL find a few satellites VERY occasionally, but 95 times out of a hundred it won't find any, even outdoors in the clear. Several other people on the XDA-Developers forum have had the same problem, or other problems with GPS on the device. It does seem to depend on the ROM version that's installed, since people with earlier ROMs aren't reporting these difficulties. Mine just won't work though, either with the bundled Google Maps, or third-party navigation software like TomTom. It's certainly NOWHERE NEAR as good as the GPS on my Touch Cruise, which is the previous generation of device and more-or-less the same GPS hardware. Pretty serious problem, considering HTC claim that the Diamond has 'ultra-sensitive GPS that will navigate as well as a standalone navigation device'. DEFINITELY not the case with mine. Incidentally, Assisted GPS is turned OFF by default on the Diamond, and there's no option to turn it on unless you install third-party software like Advanced Config. People are reporting that turning it on makes GPS far LESS effective though, which is probably why it's disabled. Must be an as-yet unresolved conflict of some kind. Also, the Diamond's GPS apparently only features 'Static Navigation' anyway, which means it doesn't pick up movement below a certain speed. This means that if you're walking (or in slow-moving traffic), it won't detect your movement at all, and will consequently lose you and mis-report your position. On the few rare occasions I've actually been able to get my Diamond's GPS working, I've confirmed that it doesn't pick up my movement when I'm walking at all, unlike my Touch Cruise. Hardly 'ultra-sensitive GPS'.

I called HTC about the problems, and they could only suggest I return the device to Handtec for replacement, which I'm doing. I'm hoping that the replacement will have a newer ROM version and that will fix the no-satellites problem. The Diamond will still only feature Static Navigation and no aGPS though, even if it works properly.

There are a few other bugs in the software too - T-Mobile is NOT recognised by this device at all, at least with the ROM version I got. Other UK networks are listed, but T-Mobile is missing. It insists on applying the settings for Virgin instead, which means the HSDPA and GPRS/EDGE connection won't work until you enter all the connection details manually. Not a major problem if you know the details, but something to be aware of if you're on T-Mobile. Hopefully it will be fixed in later ROM versions.

Also, Touchflo 3D now crashes every time I try to view SMS messages with it. I can access Messaging through the Start menu, but when I scroll to the Touchflo icon for it, it says 'Tap here to start Touchflo', then re-launches the app. It didn't do this at first, but I had to hard-reset to try to fix the GPS problem, and ever since then the SMS shortcut has caused Touchflo to reboot. I also sometimes have to soft-reset the device on startup, because it hangs on the 'Tap here to start Touchflo 3D' screen.

The only other problem I've had so far is that the Diamond is not compatible with SRS WOW HD software, which means that I can't use it to improve the device's sound. It makes a BIG difference on my Touch Cruise, and it's a real shame that it's not compatible with the Diamond. The sound is very tinny and thin without it, although no worse than on any other HTC device.

If these problems were fixed, this would be an absolutely fantastic phone. Nearly perfect in fact, if not for the short battery life and lack of SDHC slot. I really can't imagine what HTC was thinking when they left SDHC out of the device - I can only assume it was due to a lack of physical space.

When (and if) I get a Diamond that works properly, I'm sure it'll be the best phone I've ever owned. However, people should be aware that it's still a very young product, so some units and ROM versions WILL have problems. Like me, you may have to try a couple to get one that works properly, and even then there are bound to be one or two little niggles. When it works right though, there's really nothing else around at the moment that can beat this phone. Just cross your fingers and hope you get a good one. Sadly, I didn't.
